Rain lashed against the window of the university’s disciplinary office. Daniel fidgeted, the harsh fluorescent lights reflecting in his watery eyes. He'd known Mark since freshman orientation. Mark, the brilliant artist, the guy who always cracked jokes to ease the tension. Now, Mark sat across from him, head bowed, facing accusations that could derail his entire future.

He remembered the endless hours in the studio, the shared struggles, the late-night brainstorming sessions fueled by instant coffee. A knot formed in Daniel’s throat, making it difficult to swallow.

He thought of Mark's parents, the sacrifices they'd made. He thought of the fire in Mark's belly. He needed to find a way to help. “They’re wrong, Mark,” he managed to croak out, the words thick with concern.
