Sarah could barely look at Mark. They had both poured their hearts into the application, the cover letters, the endless interview preparation. Now, they were waiting. He’d barely spoken since they left the building.

He sat slumped in the park, shoulders hunched, staring at the ground. Sarah wished she could make the tension evaporate, but she wasn’t sure how.

“How do you think it went?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. The question felt clumsy, inadequate.

He just shook his head, a gesture of defeat. She knew that look. He’d been dreaming of this role for months. She wished she could take his hurt away. She wanted to hug him, but she knew that wasn't right.
