The silence in the car was thick, oppressive. Rachel had been unusually quiet since the job interview. She was usually so upbeat, so confident.

The job. They both wanted it. They had both worked so hard. But only one could have it.

He drove in a way that he did not usually drive, slow, careful, making sure to avoid the potholes. He tried to think of something to say, a joke, a distraction, but nothing came to mind.

The radio played softly, a mellow song, but it did nothing to ease the tension. He watched her profile, the way she was staring out of the window.

They arrived home, and he knew he should say something, but he couldn't.
