The wedding bells, the reception, the joy of others – all of it felt like a cruel irony to Noah. Across the room, he saw Emily, his ex-girlfriend. She was smiling, trying to participate in the festivities, but he could see the strain in her eyes.

He watched as she took a deep breath before the father-daughter dance, an obvious attempt to compose herself. He knew the song they had shared.

Later, he saw her sitting alone, staring at her plate. He approached, feeling a strange mix of emotions. “The food's good, isn’t it?” he said, hoping to break the tension. She looked up and forced a small smile. He sat with her for a moment, silently.
