The phone call ended, and a silence filled the apartment. David, the "surgeon" who'd shared endless tales of his brilliant patients, was just a medical records clerk. It was all a fabrication. Mark felt a sudden, profound discomfort. He thought back to their conversations, the pride in David's voice, the way he’d talked about saving lives. The knot in Mark’s stomach tightened.
