The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway seemed to amplify the silence. Michael had seen the phone, heard the call, the words ringing in his ears. His wife, Maya, had had a tough week. He felt the familiar pressure in his chest, a deep ache. He felt like he was drowning in the ocean.

He sat in the waiting room, and gathered himself. He had seen the phone, he had heard the call, but he couldn't bring himself to say anything. He knew she had a lot on her plate, and it would be a long time before she could get better.

He walked into the room where Maya lay, holding her hand, and watched her, and then softly kissed her cheek.
