Rain lashed against the window of the family home, mirroring the turmoil brewing inside David. He sat hunched over a cluttered desk, a mountain of school assignments spread before him. His mother's room was a shrine to his childhood; every crayon drawing, every construction paper project, every test paper he ever touched.

He picked up a science project on the solar system, meticulously constructed with Styrofoam balls and pipe cleaners. He remembered the hours he'd spent glued to the kitchen table, his mother patiently guiding him, her brow furrowed in concentration.
