The fluorescent lights of the accounting department hummed, a sterile soundtrack to Martha's final day. She watched young David, her replacement, fidgeting at her desk, his tie askew. A nervous habit, she knew it well. She remembered her own first day, the overwhelming feeling of inadequacy, the fear of not measuring up. She cleared her throat, “Don’t worry so much about the spreadsheets, David. The system’s clunky, but it eventually makes sense. Just… take your time.” She pushed a mug towards him, still warm from her morning coffee.
