The screen glowed. A friend request. From Emily Carter. He’d hated her, once. She'd been a tormentor, a queen bee, making his life at school a constant struggle. Her face, still beautiful, stared back at him from the profile picture. He felt the tension in his shoulders.

He knew she probably wouldn't remember him, not really. He was just another face in the crowd of people she’d teased. And yet, he saw the lines around her eyes, the faint hint of a sadness that he knew well.

He recalled his own struggles, his own insecurities. He took a deep breath. Her words, once hurtful, seemed less potent now. He clicked "Accept," a small act of absolution, of moving past it.
