He stared at the note, the words blurring through a sudden film of tears. "Surprise Party Canceled." It was scrawled hastily across a discarded piece of paper, probably torn off a notepad. Mark sunk onto the edge of the bed. He'd been the one to organize it, pouring hours into the arrangements for his sister, Sarah. The thought of Sarah's crestfallen expression – the way her shoulders would slump, the way her smile would fade – felt like a physical blow. He rubbed his eyes roughly, then walked to the kitchen to make some tea.
