The coffee tasted bitter, a reflection of the mood in Michael's gut. He’d overheard the whispers in the breakroom. The new guy, Ben, was pulling down a salary higher than his own, despite having less experience. Michael knew the company's financial situation had improved lately.

He watched Ben at his desk, his brow furrowed in concentration. The young man worked with a vigor Michael envied. He felt the sting of injustice but also something else, a protectiveness he didn't quite understand.

Later, he found himself walking toward Ben’s desk. "Hey," he began, trying to sound casual. "If you ever need any pointers on project management, let me know. Happy to share what I've learned." He forced a smile.
