Rain lashed against the windows of the small bistro, mirroring the storm brewing inside Chef Isabella. The critic's words echoed in her mind: "pretentious," "overpriced," "lacking soul." She slumped against the counter, the cool granite seeping into her back.

She thought of the young farmer who supplied her with heirloom tomatoes, the woman who patiently explained the nuances of her sourdough starter. The review dismissed everything, all the effort as if it meant nothing.

A waitress, Maria, peeked through the swinging doors. “Slow tonight, chef,” she said softly.
