The harsh words of the critic were a physical blow to Chef Ronan. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes as he reread the article. "A complete failure," it declared, leaving him feeling as if his life’s work was utterly worthless.

He walked to the window, the city lights a distant, shimmering blur. He knew what he wanted. He had to prove he was worthy, even though he knew he wouldn't. He picked up his phone.

He called his sister. He listened to her voice and then began to tell her. He didn't say, I need your help, but he explained his circumstances. She was the only person who truly understood.
