The card was wedged between a flyer for a local car wash and a credit card offer. It was a whimsical design, with a cartoon of a dog wearing a party hat. The inside was blank, but a small, neat handwritten note added: "I hope you have a great day." A feeling of compassion filled her.

She recalled a woman she often saw walking a small, scruffy dog. She had seen the woman’s face, etched with loneliness. The card reminded her of this woman. She considered leaving her a small gift, something simple, just to make her smile. She grabbed some dog biscuits and put them in a small bag.
