Gemotions

The musty air of the old Victorian house clung to Leo like a shroud. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture somehow unable to erase the lingering smell of mothballs and lavender that had always permeated his grandmother's belongings. His sister, Clara, was already inside, bustling about, assessing the damage and no doubt planning renovations. He knew Clara would be pragmatic about this, about the inheritance. He felt a deep ache within him, a tenderness for the woman who had filled this house with so much love, even in its current state of disrepair.

He stepped inside, the floorboards groaning beneath his weight. Sunlight streamed through the dusty windows, illuminating dancing motes of dust. The silence felt heavy, broken only by the rhythmic tick of the grandfather clock in the hall. He found Clara in the kitchen, already opening cupboards. Her face was set in a determined expression.

"It’s going to be a lot of work," she said, her voice matter-of-fact. Leo nodded, his throat tight. He walked over and gently placed a hand on the worn countertop. He remembered his grandmother teaching him to bake cookies here, flour dusting their cheeks.
