"I just... I don't get it," Maya whispered, her voice cracking. She stood behind the chain-link fence, watching the bulldozer tear into the foundation. The machine's teeth dug into the earth, the ground trembling under the relentless assault.

Her little brother, Sam, reached for her hand. He didn’t understand what was happening, but he could sense her distress. This was the place where they had celebrated their birthdays, where they had learned to ride their bikes, where their mother read them bedtime stories every night.
