The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, now felt like a taunt. Liam watched Chloe at the kitchen counter, carefully measuring out kibble into a tiny bowl. The anticipation on her face was almost painful. This was the moment she had been waiting for.

He understood her desire; the ache of loneliness that often gnawed at her, especially after her last big breakup.

“It's just… a lot of responsibility, Chlo,” he began, his voice hesitant. He knew he was treading on thin ice.

Chloe’s shoulders slumped, her chin dropping. She was already mentally preparing for the puppy she wanted. A small whimper escaped her lips.

He quickly changed his tone. "Hey, you know I'm on your side," he added, hoping to ease her disappointment. "I just want us both to be happy." The words sounded hollow, even to his own ears. He felt the familiar weight of guilt settle in his gut.
