The evening sun cast long shadows across the living room as they sat in silence. Across from him, David chewed on his lip, his usual boisterous energy completely subdued. The silence stretched, filled only by the hum of the refrigerator.

Mark found himself unable to meet David's gaze. He knew how much David craved the companionship of a furry friend.
