The salty air whipped at Clara’s face as she watched the ferry dock. Michael stepped off, his face tanned, his eyes scanning the crowd. He was more muscular, the angles of his face sharper. The sight of him caused her a strange internal twist.

She approached him, a tentative smile on her face. He gave her a questioning look, his brow furrowed, then a blank stare as he tried to place her. She swallowed. She could still see their makeshift raft, hear their laughter as they'd floated on the lake. She could feel the sun on her skin. He didn’t.

She quickly said her hello and stepped away, the waves of the sea mirroring the churning in her own chest.
