Michael scanned the room, his gaze landing on his father. He was surrounded by coworkers, all wishing him well. Michael felt the familiar pressure in his chest. His father, a military man, was retiring after a life of service.

He cleared his throat. He spoke about his father's discipline, his courage, his unwavering sense of duty. He described the deployments, the long absences, the constant awareness of danger. He talked about the sacrifices made by his father, and the family as a whole.

Michael finished, his voice strained. His father came forward, and clapped him on the shoulder, and smiled. Michael felt a sudden urge to salute, but instead just squeezed his father's hand, feeling the calluses, the strength, the years. He knew how much his father missed the job, and the comradery.
