“Well, this is… unexpected,” Professor Olsen declared, his voice a little shaky as he informed his students of his leaving. Sarah felt a sinking sensation in her chest. She found herself watching his face very intently.

He had always been so composed, so sure of himself. Now, he seemed fragile. His usual booming laughter was replaced by a more subdued tone. The walls of her office began to feel closer.

Later that evening, she found herself walking past his office. The door was ajar. She took a deep breath and gently knocked. When he waved her in, she felt a profound sense of… emptiness.
