The university courtyard seemed to shrink around her. Maria stood stock-still as Professor Klein’s message echoed in her head. She was leaving. She felt a cold dread that quickly turned to a deep, visceral… something.

She remembered his unwavering support, his belief in her abilities, even when she doubted herself. The man had been her intellectual north star. She found it hard to think straight.

She saw him later, walking across campus, head down. She almost called out to him, but then hesitated. She wanted to say something, anything. But the words wouldn't come.
