The elevator doors opened, and Emily watched as John stepped out. His face was a mask, unreadable, but she could see the tension in the way he held his briefcase. She knew the interview was that day. The silence in the office was deafening.

They’d worked together for years, weathering storms of deadlines and demanding clients. They knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses. He told her about his dreams of having the promotion, of improving his daughters' lives.

She found herself thinking about his wife and their children, the sacrifices he'd already made. She knew he had put everything into this. She felt an unexpected surge of emotion.

She took a deep breath, fighting the urge to hug him, and simply said, "Everything will be okay, John."
