Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust, coating Amelia's skin as she sifted through boxes. Sunlight sliced through a crack in the boarded-up window, illuminating swirling motes. She’d been tasked with clearing out her recently deceased mother's belongings. In a battered trunk marked "Personal - Do Not Open," she found a manila envelope. Inside, a single sheet of typed paper. A letterhead she vaguely recognized: "Claymore & Sons, Solicitors." It was her mother's draft resignation.

The words, sharp and concise, detailed the reasons for her departure – a stifling work environment, lack of recognition, and the toll it took on her personal life. Amelia ran a hand over the page, feeling the faint indentations of the typewriter keys. Her mother had never spoken of this time, of feeling undervalued. A tightness formed in Amelia’s chest.

She imagined her mother, young and determined, penning this letter, steeling herself for a leap into the unknown. Amelia carefully folded the letter back into the envelope, the paper crackling softly. Taking a deep breath, she decided to keep this to herself, a private understanding of the person her mother had been.
