David watched the way Michael's shoulders slumped. The news had clearly hit Michael hard. A move across the country, a new life, a future that no longer included their daily catch-ups. David felt a strange emptiness bloom in his chest. He cleared his throat, pushing the lump that had suddenly formed. He knew, rationally, he should be happy for Michael, but all he felt was this inexplicable sense of loss. He walked over and clapped him on the back awkwardly. “Well, man, that’s… that’s incredible.”
