The postman’s footsteps, the familiar thud of mail. She recognized the handwriting immediately. It was a face she'd not thought of in decades. Chloe let out a long, slow breath. The letter's weight was unexpectedly heavy in her hands. She sat at the kitchen table, the morning sun casting dust motes through the air. She thought of her children, now grown, the lives they'd built. The apology, years overdue, felt less about her and more about the ghosts of the past.
