The realtor had glossed over the "historical events" with a vague shrug. Now, standing in the cold, damp basement, she understood. This was where it happened. The police report, which she'd managed to find, detailed the gruesome discovery. It described a body, cold and lifeless, found behind the furnace. A wave of nausea hit her.

She shuddered, pulling her sweater tighter. The air in the basement felt heavy, stagnant, as if holding its breath. She imagined the panic, the final moments of life. Every creak of the old house seemed to whisper a tale of sorrow.

She made a quick decision. She’d transform this basement, make it a space of light and air. A workshop, maybe, or a yoga studio. She would force hope into this forgotten place, she decided.
