The flickering screen illuminated Amelia’s face as she stared at the bank statement. A lump formed in her throat. Her husband, David, always claimed they were barely scraping by. His anxieties about money were legendary. Yet, here it was: a significant sum, tucked away in an account she hadn't known existed. She ran her hand over her chest, a strange ache blossoming there.

He worked such long hours, and she knew how the pressure mounted. The kids’ school trips, the leaky roof, the ever-present worry of bills. She should be angry, she reasoned. Betrayed. But all she felt was a deep, resonating sadness.

She gently closed the laptop. The silence in the house, usually comforting, felt vast and hollow now. David would be home soon. She decided to make his favorite pasta dish, something extra special.
