The wind howled outside, mirroring the storm brewing inside Elias. The words "Financial Difficulties" on the email seemed to mock him. His mind flashed to Professor Davies, who had mentored him through his thesis. What about Davies's own research? His livelihood?

Elias pictured the bustling campus, the students racing from class to class, the lively debates in the student cafeteria. He'd felt like he belonged. He thought about the upcoming graduation ceremony he'd been looking forward to.

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture failing to calm the rising tide of concern. He had to do something, anything. He knew he was powerless, though.
