The afternoon heat shimmered above the asphalt as Mr. Garcia approached. He stood hesitantly at the edge of my lawn, his gaze fixed on the towering pine that provided shade.

He adjusted his glasses, fidgeting with his hands. "The… the insurance company is giving me grief again," he said, his voice low.

I saw the exhaustion in his eyes, the worry lines etched around them. He was a single father, always working hard.
