Michael stared at the list, his stomach churning. It was tucked under Sarah’s pillow, written in her elegant script. “Learn to play the cello” was the first item, a poignant reminder of her musical aspirations, ones she’d abandoned long ago. “Travel to Bali,” “Write a novel,” “Adopt a dog.” He felt a pang in his heart.

He’d known, of course, that she had dreams. He just hadn't realized how many, or how unfulfilled they were. He re-read the words, a knot forming in his throat. He'd been so wrapped up in his own worries, his own ambitions.

He gently placed the list back under the pillow. He resolved to be better, to actively listen to her desires, to support them. That afternoon, he found a cello teacher's number online.
