“Climb a mountain,” read the first entry. Sarah re-read the words, feeling a warmth spread through her. Her partner, Mark, was the most grounded person she knew, yet here was this list, written in his strong, clear handwriting. Followed by “Learn to play the guitar” and “Visit the Egyptian pyramids.”

She knew she had pushed him to be secure, dependable, maybe even a little boring. Now, she understood the weight he had been carrying, the dreams he had suppressed. She felt a surge of protectiveness.

She held the list against her chest for a moment. Tomorrow, she would start looking for mountain climbing instructors. It was the least she could do.
