The list was tucked inside the back of the family photo album. It was a list made by his wife, Clara. The first line was, "See the Great Barrier Reef." Then, "Write a children's book," and then, "Learn to speak Spanish." John felt an ache in his chest.

He'd been so focused on providing, on building a life, that he'd forgotten to ask what she wanted. He felt a profound sense of responsibility, of things left unsaid. He imagined her, full of quiet longing.

He closed the album, his hand lingering on the cover. He would do whatever he could to make these things happen. He had to. He would research trips to Australia.
