The heat was oppressive. The man, Mr. Davies, stood in the doorway, sweat beading on his forehead. He seemed almost ashamed to make the request. His voice was low, almost inaudible. "I… I can't afford groceries right now."

He thought of the struggle. He imagined his empty fridge, his empty pockets. The idea of having to go hungry. He didn't hesitate. "Come on in," he said, gesturing towards the side yard. "Take what you need. I've got some extra seeds and some old tools in the shed." He quickly felt the need to make more space available.
