Rain hammered against the windowpane, mirroring the way Amelia’s heart thrummed in her chest. She watched Mr. Henderson, her elderly neighbor from down the hall, shuffling towards the lobby, his shoulders slumped like a wilted flower. The notice plastered on the elevator door – “Condo Conversion: Important Information Inside” – had been the final blow. Amelia knew he relied on the building's affordable rent and the easy access to his apartment. She knew the upcoming changes would hit him hard. She quickly put on her coat, deciding to head downstairs.

She found Mr. Henderson in the lobby, staring blankly at the notice. His hands trembled as he reached for a tissue, and a wet cough wracked his thin frame. Without a word, Amelia gently guided him toward one of the worn, comfortable armchairs. She placed a cup of warm tea in his hands, hoping its warmth would offer some comfort. “Are you alright, Mr. Henderson?” she asked, her voice soft, careful not to startle him.
