He thought of his neighbor, Sarah, a single mother struggling to make ends meet. He knew she relied on the building's affordability to keep her kids in their schools. The thought of her facing an eviction sent a jolt of discomfort through him.

He pictured her, pushing a stroller with two kids, the weight of the world on her shoulders. He pictured the stress of finding a new place. He pulled his phone from his pocket. He sent a text: "Thinking of you. Let me know if you need help with anything." He knew words were cheap, but perhaps it would offer a small reassurance.
