He stared out the window, the rain blurring the city lights into shimmering streaks. The city noise, normally a comforting background, was now an irritating cacophony. His hands were clasped so tightly that his knuckles were white. His niece, Maya, had begun including a peculiar character in her artwork: a shadowy figure with elongated limbs and a single, glowing red eye. It was exactly like the figure that haunted his dreams, the figure from his darkest childhood fears.

A wave of dizziness washed over him. He felt the blood drain from his face. He should call his therapist, he thought, but the thought of having to explain everything… He rubbed his temples, a headache already forming.
