The sunlight sliced through the dusty window, illuminating particles dancing in the air. Liam paced the narrow aisle, the floorboards groaning under his weight. He kept clenching and unclenching his fists. The ring had been his grandfather's last gift to his grandmother. He was certain it had ended up here. He just had to be sure.

He approached the counter, the smell of burnt coffee and desperation filling his senses. The man behind the counter, hunched over a newspaper, didn't look up. Liam cleared his throat.

"Excuse me," he said, his voice clipped. "I saw a ring... in the case." He gestured, feeling a prickling sensation behind his eyes.
