The library was usually a sanctuary for Ben, a place of quiet focus. Today, the hushed atmosphere felt oppressive. He flipped through the pages of a textbook, but the words blurred before his eyes.

He’d known, logically, that the scholarship was a long shot. But still… the disappointment gnawed at him. He felt the familiar ache behind his ribs.

He closed the book with a snap, the sound echoing unnaturally loud. He leaned back in his chair, trying to steady his breathing.
