The coffee cup trembled in Daniel's hand. He'd been staring out the window for an hour, watching the surveyor mark the lines. His fingers drummed a frantic rhythm against the ceramic. His heart hammered a staccato beat against his ribs.

He thought of the afternoon light filtering through the existing trees, the birdsong. All that would be gone, replaced by a solid wall.

He went to the front door, stepping out into the late afternoon heat. He'd walk to the property line. He needed to understand. He started to pace.
