The clatter of tools echoed in Liam's ears, a rhythmic assault. He kept replaying the conversation in his head. The neighbor's casual announcement. The polite acceptance he’d been forced to offer. He’d barely slept.

He was on the porch, staring at the empty space. His jaw was clenched. He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He was filled with a nervous energy, unable to sit still.

He walked into the house, but couldn't seem to find a place to feel at ease. The house felt too small, too close. He wanted to scream.
