The scent of her mother's lavender-scented cleaning products filled the air, a scent that once comforted her but now felt cloying. She stood in the doorway of the living room, arms crossed, watching her mother rearrange the knick-knacks on the mantelpiece.

"Everything alright, dear?" her mother asked, not looking up. The question felt like a test, a hidden trap.

"Yeah, fine," she mumbled, her voice flat. She took a step back, feeling the sudden urge to flee. The air felt thick, difficult to breathe. Each piece of furniture, each photograph, each carefully chosen ornament felt like an accusation, a reminder of her failures.

She turned and went back to the kitchen, where she found a glass of water and sat down, staring blankly out the window. The need to find her feet again, to be alone, was an urgent, throbbing ache.
