The old house felt like a mausoleum, each room a reminder of past failures. He walked through the living room, dodging the floral furniture, the outdated television. The air hung thick with memories he couldn't escape.

His mother bustled past him, carrying a plate of cookies. "Eat something, dear," she said, her voice soft but laced with an underlying anxiety.

He took one, his fingers clumsy, and placed it on the coffee table. He was acutely aware of her watching him, of her unspoken worries. His throat felt constricted, making it difficult to swallow. The house, usually a place of comfort, had become a cage.

He excused himself, his exit rapid and abrupt. The world outside, even the cold, felt like a haven.
