Gemotions

He adjusted his tie, the silk feeling scratchy against his skin. He hadn't slept well the night before, and the lack of rest contributed to the pressure that had settled behind his eyes. The wedding venue, a sprawling estate overlooking the ocean, felt suddenly very small.

"Looking sharp, mate!" Liam clapped him on the shoulder, oblivious. "Ready to celebrate?"

He forced a smile, the muscles in his jaw protesting. He could feel the pulse in his neck throbbing. He didn't *feel* ready. He felt like he was about to be put on trial. Every joyful laugh, every clinking glass, amplified the weight in his chest.

He spotted her across the lawn, a vibrant splash of color in a sea of formal wear. Her back was to him, but the curve of her neck, the way she held herself, was instantly recognizable. He felt a wave of nausea. He took a deep, shaky breath and turned to find a waiter offering hors d'oeuvres. Maybe the distraction would help.
