The click of the front door echoed in the otherwise silent apartment. Liam found himself gripping the edge of the kitchen counter. The air around him felt thick, suffocating. Lately, every time Chloe answered her phone, she retreated to the bedroom.

His knuckles were white as he waited for her to reappear. He heard the muffled sound of a toilet flushing. Finally, she emerged, a forced lightness in her step. “What are you doing, hun?” she asked, a little too brightly, her eyes darting around the room.

He swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making it hard to speak. He gestured towards the bedroom door. “Who were you just talking to?”
