Gemotions

The scent of her perfume, usually comforting, now seemed to mock him. James sat at the kitchen table, the half-eaten dinner growing cold. He’d found the phone bill earlier. The numerous calls, the unfamiliar numbers. He could see the evidence right there on paper.

He heard her key in the lock, and felt something tighten in his chest. She walked in, her smile wide, a plastic bag of groceries in her hand.

"How was your day?" she asked cheerfully. He couldn't say a word. The words were trapped, and he only stared at the phone. He pointed at the bill, and swallowed.
