The world seemed to shrink around her. The air felt thick, heavy, suffocating. Her hands, balled into fists at her sides, trembled visibly. The red sedan, her escape, her lifeline, was gone. Vanished into the morning mist.

She'd been so close, so very close, to getting away. Now… now what? The question echoed in the hollow space inside her chest.

She paced the length of her tiny front porch, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The silence was deafening, the absence of the car a physical pressure. She needed to breathe, to think. But her thoughts, like scattered puzzle pieces, refused to align.
