"And then, you know, Sarah just *lost it*!" Mark chuckled, leaning back in his chair. The low light of the pub did little to settle the agitation in Leo's chest. He tapped his pint glass rhythmically on the table, the sound echoing in the sudden silence of his own thoughts.

Mark was recalling their disastrous attempt to build a treehouse. He was recounting the events with embellishments, weaving a tale of near-disaster and Sarah's hilarious meltdown. Leo remembered a quiet, frustrating afternoon. He remembered Mark's unhelpful suggestions and the growing realization that they were out of their depth.

The way Mark told it, it was all a joke. He was having the time of his life, remembering every detail and laughing. Leo, on the other hand, felt a dull ache behind his eyes. He didn't find it funny. He felt a creeping discomfort.
