The silence in the art gallery was thick, broken only by the quiet hum of the air conditioning. David shifted his weight, feeling the fabric of his trousers pull against his legs. He focused on a particularly abstract painting, trying to compose himself.

Across the room, Emily was animatedly gesturing at a sculpture, recounting their first meeting at a pottery class. She recalled a hilarious incident involving a collapsing sculpture, and the shared embarrassment that had bonded them. Her voice was full of warmth and amusement.
