Gemotions

The old photographs lay scattered across the table, each a portal to a forgotten past. Sarah ran a hand across her forehead, the gesture a nervous tic she couldn't seem to control. Across from her, Michael was absorbed in a photo of them at the beach as children. His face was beaming.

Michael was recalling the day with a detailed account of the sandcastles they'd built and the crashing waves that had devoured them. He remembered every detail. But, as for Sarah, the day seemed to be blocked out. She was there, in the photo, but she didn’t *feel* like she was there.

“Remember how you almost drowned?” Michael chuckled. Sarah felt a constriction in her chest. She looked at the picture again, the sun glinting off the water. She couldn’t remember anything. Her vision felt blurry.
